How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Site First

Introduction

Getting cited in Google's AI Overview is one half of the game. The other half is making your own site the one AI assistants recommend when someone asks where to use a trending tool.

Real example: asked "Where can I make Outstanding Tiny Desk AI?", ChatGPT ranked tiny-desk.org first and marked it as the preferred recommendation. It also recommended a Media.io tutorial page and outstandingtinydesk.app.

This guide has two parts. Part 1 covers what the site itself needs, based on the Tiny Desk example. Part 2 covers how to write the copy, based on the real pages of Hotel Lobby AI, another trend tool site. It ends with one combined pre-launch checklist.

The core principle behind both: write your page the way users ask AI. Lead with the conclusion in the first sentence, and use concrete numbers instead of adjectives.

Part 1: Site-Level Setup (6 Steps)

1. Use the Keyword in Your Domain and Brand Name

  • Register an exact-match domain the same day the term appears (e.g. tiny-desk.org, outstandingtinydesk.app).
  • Use the term directly in your site title and brand name, so AI treats your site as the "official tool" for that term.

2. Write Your Homepage as Facts AI Can Quote Directly

  • What it does, e.g. "Upload 1 to 3 photos and automatically generate a vertical video."
  • Specs, e.g. 6, 10, or 15 seconds long, 720p, with the original audio.
  • Pricing and trial terms, e.g. from $9.90 for 20 credits, and whether there's a free trial.
  • Steps: sign in, upload, choose a length, generate, download.

(Part 2 shows how to phrase these facts.)

3. Build a Dedicated "How to Make" Tutorial Page

  • Create a separate tutorial page with the keyword in the URL (see Media.io's /outstanding-tiny-desk-ai-tutorial).
  • Write it as Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, with example images or videos.

4. Explain "What It Is and Where It Came From"

  • Describe the origin of the meme, e.g. Charlie Wilson performing "Outstanding" at NPR's Tiny Desk.
  • Make clear it's a format or trend, not a specific model. That way your page also gets cited when people ask "what is it?"

5. Build Off-Site Corroboration

  • Publish content on Hugging Face, Instagram, F6S, and user-generated pages on authoritative sites, all pointing to your site. (See our Google AI Overview backlink playbook for the channel-by-channel checklist.)
  • Multiple sources that confirm each other make AI more confident in recommending you.

6. Verify Results with UTM Parameters

  • Links ChatGPT recommends automatically carry utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  • Filter your analytics by source to see how much traffic AI sends you and which tactics are working.

Part 2: Copy-Level — 8 Traits AI Wants to Recommend

TraitHow Hotel Lobby AI does itWhy it works
1. The title restates the user's question"Hotel Lobby AI - Free Two-Photo Video Generator (2026)": trend name + free + input + deliverable + yearIt matches "how do I make a hotel lobby video from photos for free" word for word; the year signals the content is fresh
2. The description states input, cost, output, and requirementsTwo photos, first video free, vertical 9:16 for TikTok and Reels, no app or template neededGives AI everything it needs for a recommendation in one place
3. One sentence explains input and outputH1: "Two photos. One Hotel Lobby video."AI needs a one-liner to describe a tool; you hand it one
4. Answer "what is this?" first, with concrete factsOrigin of the meme: June 2022, who performed, the orange room, how people remix itUsers ask "what is it" before "how do I make it"; answer both and the citations and recommendations both land on you
5. Steps and specs are all numbers3 steps; JPG, PNG, WEBP up to 10MB; 4, 10, or 15 seconds; 480p, 720p; 16 free credits; $5.99 per videoUsers follow up with "is it free, how much, how long"; AI prefers verifiable facts
6. FAQ answers lead with the conclusion"Is it free? Yes, new accounts get 16 free credits..." "Do I need the original video? No..."Q&A format mirrors the conversation, so AI can quote it almost verbatim
7. Proactively address risk and draw boundariesDoesn't host the original video or song, doesn't use official logos, independent fan tool, uploads require confirming photo rightsLowers your legal risk and makes you look like a legitimate tool
8. Comparison pages against competitors"Higgsfield alternative", "CapCut template vs AI"Catches "is there a free alternative?" style questions

Traits 4 and 5 are the copy-level version of site steps 4 and 2: the origin story and the homepage facts, written so AI can quote them.

Combined Pre-Launch Checklist

Site

  • Exact-match domain registered; the term is in the site title and brand name
  • Separate "how to make" tutorial page with the keyword in the URL, written as numbered steps with examples
  • Off-site content on Hugging Face, Instagram, F6S, and authoritative user-generated pages, all pointing to your site
  • Analytics set up to track utm_source=chatgpt.com traffic

Copy

  • Title = trend name + Free + input + deliverable + year
  • Description states the input, whether it's free, the output format, and requirements
  • H1 explains input and output in one sentence
  • A "what is this" section with concrete facts (dates, people, setting), clear that it's a trend, not a specific model
  • What it does, steps, formats, file sizes, lengths, resolutions, credits, prices, and trial terms all written as numbers
  • Every FAQ answer opens with the conclusion
  • Copyright and boundary disclaimers are clear
  • Competitor comparison pages and alternative pages are live
  • One page per way of asking the question, all cross-linked in the footer

Pitfalls and Things to Watch Out For

  • An exact-match domain alone isn't enough. Pair it with factual copy, a tutorial page, and off-site mentions.
  • Adjectives don't get quoted. "Amazing quality" says nothing; "720p, 15 seconds" does.
  • Burying the answer. If the first sentence of an FAQ answer isn't the conclusion, AI may skip it.
  • Don't claim to be official. Explain the trend's origin, but state that your tool is independent and set clear boundaries on music, videos, and logos.

Who Is This For?

  • AI tool sites built around new terms and viral memes
  • Makers who can register a domain and launch the same day a trend appears
  • SaaS landing pages competing for AI-assistant recommendations
  • Anyone writing FAQ, tutorial, or comparison pages for GEO (generative engine optimization) or measuring AI referral traffic

Conclusion

The sites ChatGPT recommends first look like the "official" answer. Their structure does part of the work: the keyword in the domain, a tutorial page, an origin story, and corroboration from other sites. Their copy does the rest: the user's question in the title, a one-line pitch from input to output, numbers on everything, FAQs that lead with the answer, clear boundaries, and comparison pages. Run the checklist before every launch, then use UTM tracking to see what's working.

If you build a developer tool, an AI product, or a SaaS app, there's a good chance you already have an MCP server, a set of Skills, or some Rules lying around. Or you could ship one in an afternoon. That makes Cursor Directory one of the easiest high-authority backlinks you can get. You paste a public GitHub repo URL, click scan, and you end up with a dedicated plugin page and a dofollow link back to your site.

Most free backlink lists are stuffed with low-value directories. App marketplaces run by big platforms are a different kind of opportunity: the domains are huge, the pages are relevant to software, and every approved app gets a public listing that points back to the developer's website. This guide covers the Canva Apps Marketplace, which a recent post on X describes as a free source of dofollow links from a DR 93 domain.

When a new term or meme starts trending, Google's AI Overview has very little to cite yet. It reaches for a handful of high-authority platforms where content can be published fast. If you publish there first, with a link back to your own site, you have a shot at two wins at once.
